How to Celebrate World Creativity and Innovation Day

Although creativity and innovation are ongoing skills to be acquired and values to be practiced throughout the year, it’s a good opportunity to celebrate them in a dedicated event and inspire your employees to unleash their creative potentials. Try out these ideas for celebrating World Creativity and Innovation Day. Or, better yet, come up with your own creative ideas!

Twist your routine and do things differently
Making a habit of doing something out of the ordinary; even walking around the block in the opposite direction to how you normally do it can shake things up and improve creativity. This leads you to a more a conscious state of realizing the world around you, refreshing your senses and mind in response to the stimulus you face.

Meet with different People1
In the same way that doing something differently can bring about ideas, collaboration with others who think differently than ourselves can help to foster ideas. Find a group to gather with that is outside of the typical type of people in life.

  • Become part of a community effort that is outside the typical charity involvement for you and learn why this effort is so important to them.
  • Find cultural events advertised in the local newspaper or online. Join in and learn more by giving compliments, showing interest and asking questions.
  • Take a local community education class. These might be advertised at the library or on a community website. This not only helps to learn a new skill, craft or hobby but allows for getting to know people who are outside of the groups you might ordinarily meet with.

Visit a new culture
Seeing the regular things or the customed habits from a new perspective is an eye refresher and helps in sharpening our creativity faculty. This can be through an event to learn about the way different people groups and cultures across the globe do things. You can visit the place by watching a documentary about it or actually going there. Google Arts & Culture can help a lot.

Organize a book review session
Select a book about creativity or innovation. Share it with your team or colleagues. You can have either a physical or virtual sessions, preferably within working hours to discuss the book and what the attendees have learned after reading the book. The learning and development department can help in organizing the session.

Invite your team for a hands-on session
Plan for a workshop that helps the team learn how to generate new ideas, make new decisions, take new actions, and achieve new outcomes that make the world a better place. This can be applied to a real problem they seek to solve or a procedure they need to enhance. You can use some powerful models for brainstorming and generating ideas like the 6 Thinking Hats or SCAMPER or any other tools to practice creativity and touch on how it can be enjoyable and beneficial.

A jar or a wall for innovative Ideas
Get them a jar or a box in which they share new creative ideas throughout the day and in return, they get candy or a bar of chocolate. You can rank the reward as per the idea relativity to the business, in order to reward (and reinforce) creativity in general and those in the organization’s benefit in specific.

This also can be applied using a wall or a board in which you encourage them to share creative ideas. A physical board may be more engaging while a virtual board may be easier and accessible for a remote team.

Use the WCID as an opportunity to change creativity from a trait of the privileged few to any individual or team faculty. Be sure that all people are able to generate the breakthroughs that stimulate growth and performance. This needs only some belief and much persistence.
