A Jambalaya Workplace
The term Jambalaya usually describes a widely diverse mixture. For the first time in history, the workplace now involves four, and sometimes five, different generations. These are, respectively:
- Traditionalists: 1925 to 1945
- Baby Boomers: 1946 to 1964
- Generation X: 1965 to 1980
- Millennials: 1981 to 2000
- Generation Z: 2001 to 2020
For a healthy workplace, this means a diverse workforce with different perspectives, and backgrounds.
However, it also means different expectations for the employee and the employer.
It is a challenge for the employer to understand each generation and its needs. But this understanding will help create a favorable employee experience. It will also support retaining the employees, in addition to bridging this generational gap.
As for the employee, the challenge lies in understanding the different generations than theirs and adjusting communication across each.
